TAS Personalised Plates: The Complete 2026 Guide

Tasmania punches well above its weight when it comes to personalised plate options. Through TasPlates — the official personalised plate provider appointed by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles — Tasmanians have access to over 100 unique plate styles, from classic elegance to Euro, JDM, 3D, and vibrant themed designs.
All TasPlates are bought outright with no annual renewal fees. Your unique combination belongs to you from the moment of purchase, and you can buy plates even without a vehicle to attach them to. Whether you're buying your first set, restyling your existing plates, or thinking about selling, this guide covers everything you need to know.
What makes TAS plates unique
No annual fees. TasPlates are a one-off purchase. Since 1 March 2007, your combination belongs to you permanently with no recurring charges. This is consistent with Queensland, Victoria, and WA, and a significant advantage over NSW where some plate types carry annual renewal fees.
Over 100 styles. TasPlates offers one of the largest style ranges of any state, including classic, colour-on-black, tech, chic, US style, carbon fibre, prestige, Euro, JDM, 3D, and numerous themed designs. The range is regularly updated with new options.
Buy without a vehicle. You can purchase TasPlates without assigning them to a vehicle. If you later decide to attach them to a car, visit a Service Tasmania Centre and complete an Application for Replacement Number Plates. This makes TasPlates a viable gift or investment purchase.
Online and phone ordering. Unlike the ACT where most plates must be ordered in person, TasPlates can be ordered through the TasPlates website or by calling the TasPlates Contact Centre on 1300 787 060.
Anyone can buy. You don't need a Tasmanian driver's licence to purchase TasPlates. Individuals and companies can apply for a Customer Reference Number (CRN) through Service Tasmania and order plates. If you do choose to assign them to a vehicle, the vehicle must be registered in Tasmania in the same name as the plate owner.
Not subject to GST. TasPlates purchases are not subject to GST, meaning the advertised price is the final price with no additional charges.
5-year warranty. All TasPlates are covered by a 5-year manufacturer's warranty from the date of purchase.
Plate styles and pricing
TasPlates offers an extensive range. Costs vary based on the style and characters chosen. Here's an overview of the key categories.
Classic and Standard Styles — from $299
The entry-level range includes clean, understated designs. Classic plates are popular for their timeless look and suit a wide range of vehicles. Available in standard and slimline sizes.
Prestige Plates
Premium plates that come with a black anodised aluminium frame and a polymer front window. Prestige plates are the top-tier option for drivers wanting the most refined finish. These plates carry a higher price point (around $1,755 for new orders based on recent listings) and are popular on the secondary market.
Prestige Plus — 7 Characters
A special range that allows up to 7 characters for cars, trailers, and heavy vehicles (standard plates allow up to 6). Your Prestige Plus plate must contain at least 2 letters, one of which is not an 'I' or 'O'. All-numeric content is reserved as limited edition and only available during specific times of the year.
Euro Plates
European-style elongated plates suited to imported European vehicles. A popular choice for BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Volkswagen owners across Tasmania.
JDM Plates
Japanese Domestic Market style plates designed for imported Japanese vehicles with non-standard plate cavities. Smaller than standard Australian plates.
3D Plates
Plates with a three-dimensional raised-character effect for a distinctive, modern look.
Themed and Specialty Plates
TasPlates offers themed designs including sports and leisure, causes, and various graphic styles. The range has evolved over time — some earlier designs (Bling, fishing, AFL, and camouflage plates) were withdrawn from sale in 2017, so if you own any of those styles they may carry additional collector value.
Motorcycle Plates
Personalised plates for motorcycles are limited to 5 characters due to their smaller size. Available in various styles from the TasPlates range.
Trailer and Caravan Plates
TasPlates can be ordered for trailers and caravans directly through the TasPlates website.
How to buy TAS personalised plates
Ordering TasPlates is straightforward:
Visit tasplates.com and browse the available styles
Choose your plate style, size, and enter your desired character combination (up to 6 characters for cars, 7 for Prestige Plus, 5 for motorcycles)
Check availability
Complete your purchase online or call TasPlates on 1300 787 060
If assigning to a vehicle, you'll need to provide your Tasmanian driver's licence number or CRN
Plates are custom-made and delivered to you with a reply-paid bag for returning your old plates
Once you receive your new plates, you must return your existing plates in the reply-paid bag provided or at a Service Tasmania Centre within 7 days. Failure to do so may result in a fine of up to $1,000
If you don't have a Tasmanian driver's licence, you'll need to visit a Service Tasmania Centre with proof of identity documents to have a Customer Reference Number (CRN) created for you first.
Restyling existing plates: If you already own TasPlates and want a new design while keeping your existing combination, you can restyle through the TasPlates website or by calling the Contact Centre. A fee applies. In most ranges, you can change the style and keep your current characters, provided the character format matches the new plate style.
Gift vouchers are available through the TasPlates website and Contact Centre.
Transferring TAS personalised plates
Moving plates between your vehicles
If you're transferring TasPlates between vehicles that are registered in your name, there is no transfer fee. You'll need to visit a Service Tasmania Centre to complete the paperwork and purchase standard plates for the vehicle you're removing the TasPlates from.
Selling plates privately
TasPlates can be sold to another person. The process requires:
Both buyer and seller complete a Transfer Right to Display form (available from Service Tasmania)
Visit a Service Tasmania Centre with the completed form and identification
A transfer fee of $39 applies
If the buyer wants to assign the plates to their vehicle, they'll also need to complete a Replace Plates Application and surrender any existing plates on that vehicle.
Keeping plates when selling your car
If you're selling your vehicle but want to keep your TasPlates, you'll need to purchase a set of standard general-issue registration plates for the car you're selling before completing the sale. Visit a Service Tasmania Centre to arrange this.
You can then hold onto your TasPlates without them being on a vehicle. There's no requirement to store them at a government centre — you keep them at home.
Selling your TAS personalised plates
Tasmania's smaller population means the local market for plates is more niche, but that also means unique combinations stand out more. National marketplaces extend your reach well beyond the island.
What determines TAS plate value:
Character length — shorter combinations are rarer and more desirable
Words and names — plates that spell recognisable words or names command higher prices
Discontinued styles — plates in styles no longer sold by TasPlates (Bling, fishing, AFL, camouflage) carry additional collector value
Prestige plates — the premium finish and aluminium frame make these more sought after
Tasmanian heritage — plates with local significance (town names, landmarks) appeal to Tasmanian collectors
Where to sell:
You can list your TAS plate for free on AusPlates to reach buyers across Australia. AusPlates is a dedicated marketplace for personalised number plates — no listing fees, no commission. Before listing, check what your plate is worth using the free instant valuation tool to get a data-driven starting price.
