QLD Personalised Plates: The Complete 2026 Guide

Queensland has one of Australia's most diverse personalised plate systems, managed by Personalised Plates Queensland (PPQ). With over 300 designs ranging from Classic black-and-white plates to emoji-themed options, QLD offers something for every taste and budget. Best of all, Queensland plates are a one-off purchase — no annual renewal fees.
Whether you're buying your first set of custom plates, transferring ownership, or looking to sell plates you already own, this guide covers everything you need to know.
What makes QLD plates unique
Unlike some other states, Queensland personalised plates are yours for life once purchased. There are no ongoing annual fees — a significant advantage over NSW, where annual charges apply to certain plate types.
QLD plates are managed by PPQ (Personalised Plates Queensland), which operates under the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). PPQ handles all plate design, manufacturing, and sales, while TMR manages the registration and transfer paperwork.
Another Queensland-specific benefit: you can keep your plates even if you sell your car, move interstate, or simply want to store them at home. The plates remain registered to your name indefinitely.
Plate styles and pricing
PPQ offers an extensive range of plate styles. Here's a breakdown of what's available and what you can expect to pay.
Classic Plates — from $195
The most affordable option. Classic Plates convert your existing standard-issue number plate combination into stylish black-and-white aluminium plates. You keep your existing combination — no customisation of characters is available with this style. Available in standard and slimline sizes.
Colour Plates — from $495
Colour Plates let you choose your own combination along with five colour options. You can also add a personalised caption message and diamond separator. These are one of PPQ's most popular ranges for people who want full customisation at a mid-range price point.
Theme Plates — from $495
A huge range of themed designs including Iconic Queensland plates, sports team plates, emoji plates, Warner Bros. characters, DC Comics, Harry Potter, First Nations designs, and charity plates. Theme Plates let you combine a custom combination with a design that reflects your personality.
Team Plates — from $495
Over 20 team designs across NRL, State of Origin, and AFL. Perfect for footy fans who want to show their team colours on the road.
Euro Plates — from $695
Elongated European-style plates in sleek designs. Available in Euro Classic, Euro Theme, and Signature Series styles. White on black or black on white options with prestige-style combinations.
Prestige Plates — from $2,500
The premium tier. Prestige Plates offer maximum flexibility with combinations and are available in various colours and themes. Over 20 designs to choose from with the most character options. Prices range from $2,500 up to $5,000 depending on the combination format.
Q Plates — heritage range
Q Plates are a piece of Queensland motoring history, originally released in 1921 and issued until 1955. These heritage plates are available through PPQ and are highly sought after by collectors.
Combination formats and rules
QLD plates follow specific combination formats depending on the plate style:
Colour and Theme Plates typically allow combinations of up to 6 characters — letters, numbers, or a mix. Shorter combinations (2-3 characters) command higher prices due to their rarity and visual impact.
Prestige Plates offer the most flexibility with longer combinations and more character options.
Important rules to know:
Motor vehicles require two plates (front and rear) — these are always sold as a pair
Trailers and motorcycles only require one plate
PPQ will not approve combinations that are offensive, obscene, or contrary to public interest
The Department of Transport and Main Roads reserves the right to recall plates if a combination is deemed inappropriate

Transferring QLD personalised plates
Moving plates to a new vehicle
If you've bought a new car and want to move your personalised plates across, fill out the Remove and/or Attach form (Form F2964) and lodge it at a TMR Customer Service Centre. There's a small fee for new standard plates to go on the vehicle you're selling.
Selling or buying plates privately
QLD personalised plates can be sold privately. The process requires:
Both buyer and seller complete a Personalised Plates Transfer Application (Form F2963)
Both parties sign the form
Lodge the form at a TMR Customer Service Centre
The buyer pays a transfer fee of $114.20 (set by TMR, subject to change)
Family transfers are free. Transferring plates to an immediate family member (spouse, parent, or child) can be done without a transfer fee, provided it's wholly by way of a gift.
Keeping plates when selling your car
You can absolutely keep your personalised plates when you sell your vehicle. Fill out the Remove and/or Attach form at TMR, pay a small fee for replacement standard plates for the vehicle, and store your personalised plates at home until you're ready to use them again.
Selling your QLD personalised plates
If you own QLD personalised plates and are thinking about selling, you have several options.
PPQ Resale Noticeboard: PPQ operates a resale noticeboard where plate owners can list their plates for prospective buyers. However, the terms and risks of any sale are between the buyer and seller — PPQ facilitates the listing but doesn't manage the transaction.
Private sale: You can sell directly to a buyer you find through classifieds, social media, or word of mouth. The transfer process is outlined above.
List on AusPlates: For a wider audience of buyers specifically looking for personalised plates, you can list your QLD plate for free on AusPlates. AusPlates is Australia's dedicated marketplace for personalised number plates — no listing fees, no commission. You can also check what your plate is worth using the free instant valuation tool before listing.
What are QLD plates worth?
The resale value of QLD personalised plates depends on several factors:
Character length — shorter combinations (2-3 characters) are significantly more valuable
Meaning — plates that spell words, names, or have obvious meanings command higher prices
Plate style — Prestige and Q Plates tend to hold more value than standard Colour Plates
Rarity — combinations that can't be replicated or are no longer available
Market demand — popular names, car references, and status-oriented combinations sell faster
Some Queensland plates have sold for tens of thousands of dollars on the private market. If you're curious about what your plate might be worth, get a free instant valuation on AusPlates.
